We were beyond thrilled to see this showhouse designed by Betsy Berner and Tara Sutphin of Berner Sutphin Designs. They used Fadini Borghi Sidonia fabric (I6438-002) as wall upholstery and the portiere fabric is Fadini Borghi Olimpia (I6432-002). Braquenie Jacquard les Muses et le Lion Tisse fabric (B7545-001) is the toile of choice for the pillows (page 106).

On Wednesday, July 28th, Pierre Frey along with blogger Nicole Gibbons of So Haute, and blogger Josh Greene of Shagreene, co-hosted the even 'Right Now In Design' at the New York Showroom. To say this night was a great success is an understatement as many of New York's top designers and editors attended to hear the panel of speakers: (L-R) Steven Gambrel, Laura Kirar, Nate Berkus, and Jesse Carrier.

Nicole and Josh moderated the discussion to focus on three main topics: how to build a brand, the state of the design industry today, and what's next in interior design.

Pierre Frey Exposition 1935-1955 Inspiration & Realism of Fabrics

Last week, our New York showroom hosted 2 events to launch an exhibition of orginal artwork and textiles from 1935 – 1955. Pierre Frey archivist Sophie Rouart was in New York from Paris for the installation and events. The works were created by artists, painters, and designers of the time who Pierre Frey, the founder, worked with to develop the creative and lively prints that would become his legacy.

The exhibition containine 45 examples of textiles, drawings, and paintings is influenced by two main artistic styles: Neo-Midievalism and Surrealism. Designs are by talented artists such as Jean Chatanay, Janine Janet, Picard Le Doux, Jean-Denis Malcles, and Ken Scott.

After July 30th, the exhibit will be shipped to a new city, which is to be decided.

On display in the New York showroom window is Pierre Frey Geneviève fabric, F2487, inspired by the original print Papillons by Geneviève Prou, 1938.

Our Braquenié room was made into a mini-gallery where guests ate and drank while viewing many unique prints.

Three great prints: Arlequin (left), Cordages (top right), and Rinceaux (bottom right), became fast favorites of many.

The corridors are lined with exquisite prints including Carte du Monde (top) and Etoiles (bottom).

EVISA FAIR - The Hague - 14th, 15th and 16th March 2010

The 86-room Crosby Street Hotel opened in October 2009 and is situated in the heart of New York City’s vibrant SoHo area.
Kit Kemp, co-founder of the Firmdale Hotels, also served as design director on the project.

We were honored to be chosen for this fresh and contemporary English style establishment. Kit Kemp's design is a mixture of colour and texture, modern and antique. The designer decorated the bar's benches with a PIERRE FREY fabric, Arolla (F2601 -reversible).

Just in time to experience our first big February snow storm, Patrick and Lorraine Frey arrived in New York to host our launch event at the fabulously stylish Crosby Street Hotel. The event, which also served as the kick-off to our 75th year, was a great success. Guests included many of New York's top designers, and editors from most every major magazine. Pierre and Patrick made their way down South to present the January 2010 collections in Miami, Atlanta, Houston and Dallas. The collections were received with great enthusiasm.

At Pierre Frey, we try to love all our fabrics and wallpapers equally, but sometimes playing favorites can be hard to avoid. Of the January 2010 collections, we have a few standouts which Louis Corello of the New York showroom gives us some insight into:

Town & Country - January

Pierre Frey Structure fabric (F2693-002) is shown in a tassels and trims story as a great backdrop fabric when using detailed tassels and trims to distinctively transform a neutral palette (page 57).

Veranda - January-February

Designer Sue Burgess uses a few Pierre Frey fabrics in an Urban Solace story where her mission was to design a home using comfortable and cozy neutrals with custom touches. Top photo: She chose Croise Collobrieres fabric (F0556) for the draperies (page 70-71). Bottom photo: Khea fabric (F2587) is used to upholster vintage chairs , and Lulli fabric (F2440) is used for pillows in a soft blue (page 74).

House Beautiful - February

San Francisco designer Ken Fulk uses Boussac Paloma fabric (O6031-004) in his "Instant Room". He mentions how the fabric is reminiscent of what you might find at an authentic Indian market and how it captures that special find essence (page 16).

II-FOCUS ON…PARIS

Paris has always been a refugee and a place of creation for the artists. Sometimes setting of ordinary life, symbol of power or city of amazing monuments, Paris is a source of multiform inspirations for creators.
Changing all the time, this city remains associated with charm, elegance and romantism. Vanessa Bruno for fashion incarnates the spirit of Parisian women : chic and relaxed at the same time.
Since 1935, Pierre Frey has been inspired by the city of light. Often editing fabrics depicting Paris, Pierre Frey once again celebrates this year this city but in a non figurative way, revealing a way of life : comfortable and elegant.

A painting from Monet

The painters and authors are the first to celebrate or use Paris in their creations. The examples are numerous : Monet and his series of railway stations, Jacques Prévert in his poetry.

Since the 18th century, fabrics have been depicting a picture of Paris, sometimes anecdotal, political or graphical.

Rolled printed cotton. It depictes Paris during the Restauration period because of the white flags and the choice of the buildings. Pleading an architectural representation, we understand a political message : the celebration of the Bourbon’s return to power in 1814 with the accession to the throne of Louis XVIII

It depictes the « jardin des plantes » with its different monuments, just after its building. You can see a camel pulled out by a man.

On this fabric, the flags are tricoloured. The statue of Napoleon is on the top of the Vendôme colomn. Removed in 1814, it was put again in 1833 by Louis-Philippe.
In 1808, started the construction of « la bourse de Paris », called in this time Palais Brongniart, according to the name of the architect.
This fabric by the choice of the different buildings celebrated indirectly Napoléon the Ist.

Paris DECO OFF - January 2010

This January, we took part in Paris DECO OFF, a unique event where for the first time Parisian showrooms opened their doors to visitors, both national and international, with special events for new designs and collections.
During 5 days a special itinerary connected the historic quarters of Paris : Bastille, Place des Victoires, Assemblée nationale and Saint germain des prés.
We exhibited our new fabrics, furniture, lamps and accessories in our Rue du Mail and Rue de Furstenberg showrooms. Roselyne, our Paris-based in house designer coordinated the displays. It was a terrific show and our new products received a positive reaction! Big thanks to everyone!

This year, we took part in Intirio Expo. Held from January 31. until February 3rd, it is the biggest professional show to join together a complete offer of interior decoration and household linen for the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) and the north of France.
We were pleased to welcome many visitors who pointed out the chic spirit of Pierre Frey fabrics as well as the refreshing design of Boussac this year.

Fabric Awards 2009

The 106-year-old prestigious House & Garden celebrated last October 2009 its worldwide recognized Fabric Awards.

Between the different categories we are interested in point out the following one: Best blow-the-budget wallpaper, since it was the Pierre Frey fabric “Ming in Saphire” the one chosen by event’s five judges.

The reason why was given by one of the members of the jury: “Even if you spent little else on a scheme, this breathtaking design would completely transform a room. It is truly stunning.”

November was the moth elected to publicize the new Pierre Frey's fabric BILLBAUDE.

Consistent with the fabric's warm motifs and colours, the presentation took place in the village of Sologne. The emblematic Château de la Ferté Beauharnais was where the collection was exposed by Patrick Frey.

A steady stream of designers have been asking about the fabric on the chairs of the Markham Roberts room featured in House Beautiful's November issue. It is a classic, Toile de Nantes (F1977), that was custom colored for him. (pages 134-135) Custom coloring this fabric requires a 100 yard minimum. Our New York showroom hosted a market presentation and book signing on October 8th, drawing a crowd of about 120 designers. The book is an entertaining recant of the cultural changes of the 17th & 18th centuries, for which these beautiful fabrics figured prominently.

Milgate, the Australian distributor of Pierre Frey ran by our long time friend and partner Pierre Hivert and his wife Andrea has recently extended it Show-Room, offering to its clients an even more complete selection of products in a wonderful set-up.

However, there have just been their personal skills and their hard and well done work, the key points that have allowed Migate’ Show-Room to be enlarged in such a difficult time.

From the central offices of Pierre Frey, we want to recognize and eulogize the excellent work they are realizing day after day.

Last week, in Poland, a show arranged by Pierre Frey had place.

Celebrated in the French Embassy, Patrick Frey presented the new range of Pierre Frey's references and collections to the Eastern European Commercials and Clients.

Reflected on the attached pictures below, the event proceeded in a familiar and friendly way as usual.
Anyway, the success of the show was due to our client Françoise Bourbon and Barbara Rodowicz from the Grisard Society placed in Varsovie , who arranged perfectly everything and took care of every little detail.

TOILES DE JOUY. French Printed Fabrics

Today, « Toile de Jouy » has become a generic term meaning all monochrome printed fabrics regardless of the design’s origin. Historically, however, Toiles de Jouy are the printed fabrics made by Oberkampf at Jouy-en-Josas during the 18th and the 19th centuries.
Braquenié bought a lot of documents when the manufactoring equipment was sold.That’s what explain the important share of toiles de Jouy in our collections.

I-Fabric’s origin

Toile de Jouy as you know is a printed fabric. The oldest printed textile was discovered in « Mohendjo Daro » (South of Pakistan). It was from 2500 to 1500 BC. During the 16th century, european people discovered printed fabrics from India. They called them « Indiennes ». The taste for these fabrics grew during the second half of the seventeenth century.

The prohibition (1686-1759)
By the end of the 17th century, the printed fabrics had come to rival traditional French textiles (wool, silk). As a result, the « Conseil d’Etat » decided in 1686 to prohibite the importation, production and use of printed fabrics. Dispate this decision, the taste for these fabrics didn’t dicrease. The fabrics remained in clandestine circulation. The prohibition was lifted in 1759 because of its failure.

II-Oberkampf’s factory (1760-1843) and the manufactoring process

The factory opened in 1760 in Jouy-en-Josas closed to Versailles. The factory became « manufacture royale » in 1783. The manufactory closed in 1843.
Braquenié bought a lot of documents when the manufactoring equipment was sold in 1845. That’s what explain the important share of toiles de Jouy in our collections.

Printing fabric was a long and complex process in the 18th century.

This fabric depicts the manufactoring process about 1784. Oberkampf asked J-B Huet to create this pattern to celebrate his factory. The different stages are depicted in this fabric.

At river’s edge, workers beat undyed cotton to remove substances added during the weaving

Techniques used to apply the mordants.
In order to obtain fast color, fabrics were printed in two stages : firstly, workers applyed invisible mordants (metallic oxides). Secondly, they dipped fabrics in dye bath. A chemical reaction took place which fixed the colors to fibers where mordants were prevouisly applyed.
a-Wood block. It’s the oldest technique to print a fabric. One block for one colour. An example : to print « Le grand corail », worker used 96 wood blocks. 6 blocks per color and 16 colors. A good worker can apply 4 colours on 30 meters per day.
b-Copper-plate : This technique was dicovered by Nixon in 1752 in Ireland. Despite the limitation of inking in only one color, fine linear affects were more possible than with wood blocks.
After applying mordants, workers dipped fabrics in manoeur bath to remove excess mordants.

Afterwards, the textile was dipped in dye, a chemical reaction took place which fixed the colors to fibers. The principal dye was madder. By using different mordants, a wide range of colours could be produced.

Fabrics were dried in the loft or hung on the roof. After, they were layed out on the fields to bleach them.

The pencillors. Some colours used in a little part on the fabric were applied by the pencillors. Until 1808, they applied blue on yellow to make green. They made their pencils with their own hair.

Wax was applied on the fabric. Sometimes, workers used an agate stone to polish the fabric.

These pastoral scenes were inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
The country was idealized : scenes of dancing, hunting, farming, children playing
or numerous animals (cows, goats, hens and ducks).

Mythology
The archeologic discoveries of Pompéi and Herculaneum gave birth in the late 18th century to the neoclassical movement. Oberkampf printed 22 patterns inspired by mythology. Todays, some scenes seem unclear but in Oberkampf’s day, society knew the significante of the figures.

Literary, opera
Nine designs contain reference to literary and musical works. The fable of La Fontaine offered sources of inspiration. Music was an another influence in his fabrics. Himself a music-lover, he invited musicians for concerts on sundays to the factory.

Exotic scenes
Exoticism is composed of two kinds of design : imitation of indian model or chinoiserie. Chinoiserie was very appreciated during the second half of the eighteenth century. The designers didn’t go to china. They used for their creations, accounts of travels or things brought back from China. Chinoiserie is a western interpretation of China which was wholly imaginary. We know that because many of them were sent to China. The Chinese thought these printed fabrics expressed western civilisation and not their own culture.

A large part of the production was composed of polychrom flower patterns (Over 30 thousand) They were widely used for furnishing as well as dressmaking. The size and the shape of the design determined the use of the fabric.

II-FOCUS ON... SKY

2009 has been declared by the UN to be the International year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009). The focus is on enhancing the public’s engagement and understanding of astronomy.

Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects such as stars, planets, comets and galaxies and tries to explain their origin, their evolution and the influence they have on our lives.

Certified since the Age of Bronze, the interest for the sky has always expressed a spiritual quest : “Who are we, Where are we from, where do we go ? ». The predictive and divinatory knowledge is one of the primary motivating factors for astronomical observation.

In early times, astronomy only comprised the observation and predictions of the motions of objects visible to the naked eye : the Maya civilisation mentioned for the first time one lunar eclipse around 3380 BC.

The first theories about the Universe are from 500 years BC. Their principe is : Earth is a changing world whereas the sky is the space of harmony and perfection. Aristote (-384/-322), a greek philosopher, depicted the univers in 4 elements : the Earth, the Water, the Fire and the Air.
Ptolémée (about 90/160) thought that the sun and other planets revolved around the Earth. This conception of the Universe was accepted until the end of the 15th century. During the 16th century, Copernic discovered that the sun is the center of one system. Galilée’s observations corroborated this hypothesis.

During the 18th century, the improvments in Astronomy modified the conception of the sky and the Universe. Cultured people wanted to know more and more about the last discoveries. Since this period, the enthusiasm for this science has never decreased. Several Decorative objects depicte the Universe, revealing by the same way its esthetic qualities. Last 3 of September, the International Pierre Frey’ Seminary took place.
The event knitted together all the European filial and office’s responsible, as well as the ones from Dubai.

Being the main issues to put forward the September 2009 Action Plan and the 2010 Commercial Policy to adopt, the seminary could be defined as a charming familiar meeting. That was thank to the hospitality of Mr. an Mrs. Frey, who proposed their Galluis House as the place where to celebrate the meeting.

We recently hosted a press trip to our wallpaper factory in Hoboken, New Jersey.

You might wonder why a French company is making wallpaper in the United States. Although wallpaper has somewhat of a history in France, we can credit the Victorian's for making it a staple of stylish decor in America. The craftsmen that honed their skills during this time passed them on through the generations, leaving a legacy of highly skilled artisans in the U.S. Walking into this factory is like taking a step back in time. Modern technology has completely bypassed this space! The length of the building cozily fits printing tables that accommodate a 5 roll length of wallpaper (75 feet). First, the paper is laid perfectly straight, ensuring that the screens can be placed in the exact position each time. Each color has it's own screen, and Pierre Frey wallpapers typically have 10 or more colors, so this process is so important. The screens are manually moved down the length of the paper one-by-one.

Hand-screening

In another incredible example of the craft employed here, it's astonishing to watch the colors being mixed. You might expect to see a worker punching color codes into a machine that dispenses pigments. Not here. The color experts mix by eye, adding un-measured amounts of pigment until the inks match the master samples perfectly.

Each stage of the process requires a unique, artisinal skill. The amount of detail, craftsmanship, and time that goes into this process creates a product of incomparable beauty.

Following some alterations to our showroom, we were thrilled to see both levels of the showroom as busy as ever during London Design Week.

The 2009 fabric collections received an excellent welcome and the new wallpaper collection was a hit from day one.

We were delighted to have Vincent and Micheline Taillardat with us for 2 days. The Taillardat collection in the window managed to attract many passers by and some very interested trade clients. It's rather fun having a mini Versailles room set on the Fulham Road.

The exhibition « féerie indienne » is a good opportunity to focus on own collection of palampores. Palampores is the name given for big panels with either a central motif depicting a tree of life or an all-over pattern, embellished by a large floral border. 7 of the 17 palampores conserved at the Archives have already been edited by Braquenié.

During the 16th century, European discovered printed fabrics from India. They called them « Indiennes ». The East India company, founded by Colbert in 1664, participed in the diffusion of these light, colored and easy to clean fabrics. Mostly used for garments and furnishings, they were very appreciated. The textiles, representing 50% of the goods brought back by the ships, were white pieces of cotton or polychrome printed fabrics (pieces of cotton measuring about 20 meters or panels).

These fabrics were used as wall panels or as bedspreads. Very appreciated since the end of the 17th century, their importation kept increasing : 700 in 1682, 2406 in 1683 and 7286 in 1784. To satisfy the western customers’ taste, the companies had textiles made exclusively for the European market.

By the end of the 17th century, as the printed fabrics were too much competing with traditional French textiles (wool, silk), the corporations asked the government to ban these fabrics. In 1686, the “council of state” decided to prohibite the importation, production and use of printed fabrics. Manufacturing equipments were seized and destroyed. In spite of this decision, the infatuation for these fabrics remained the same, encouraging the underground circulation. As the prohibition ended in 1759, a lot of factories opened in France, manufacturing fabrics inspired by indiennes. Since them, indiennes have always been in vogue.

To make life easier for our customers, we have again adhered to the basic tenet of the Boussac brand, which has always been “easy maintenance for an easy life”. Installation of a new Braquenié carpet

Here is a beautiful example of a Braquenié carpet instalation in a very famous hotel in the South of France. The quality is Wilton (woven in France in a mill dating from the XIXth century) and the design was custom made for the hotel based on a Braquenié archives.

Braquenié helped developping the art of tapestry in Aubusson and has been rewarded for it at the Exposition Universelle in 1844. In 1847, King Louis Philippe awarded Braquenié the title of "Manufacture Royale de Tapis". Braquenié has always served the Greatests (Madame Cliquot Ponsardin, Baron Haussmann, Duke of Padoue, Victor Hugo, Sultan Said Pasha, Emperor Maximilien, Theodor Rossevelt...). Many famous artists (Ehrmann, Chasal-Dussurgey, Dubufe...) have contributed to the aesthetic heritage of Braquenié enhancing its unique and inimitable style.

Our carpets and rugs can be inspired from our archives (more than 10 000 documents of many different styles), our fabrics or from an idea given by our client. We can use many different carpet techniques: Wilton of course, but also Hand Tufted, Hand Knotted, Aubusson, Savonnerie, Axminster...

Exhibition: "Indian Magic World" Printed fabric from the coasts of India to the French kingdom

Pierre Frey is the proud sponsor of this exhibition in the Musee de l'Impression sur Etoffes in Mulhouse. The Exhibition “Indian Magic World”, painted fabrics from the coasts of India to the French kingdom, allows Braquenié to realise an unpublished décor and to stage some of the latest Indian creations which were inspired by documents of the archive. So the Printing Museum dressed up these luxurious printed fabrics, attesting the excellence of this subject revisited by the creative eye of the House Pierre Frey. A beautiful way to show that classic fabrics and old drawings also harmonise in modern decorations. During the inauguration of the exhibition the Printing Museum has appointed Patrick Frey “honorary member” as a reward for his infallible support. The exbhitiion was alos possible thanks to the support of Hermes Paris.
